1. The blunt and simple answer to culture affecting student performance is yes it does. The textbook offers some examples that seem erroneous, to in theory help dissuade the reader for using culture as a divider in a classroom. Examples include that culture is reserved for the privileged, the dependency of Latino children for their parents leads to deficiencies, or that Vietnamese students don’t typically want to work in groups. Despite these examples that oversimplify, there are indeed critical differences. In order to address these differences, let us consider the power of expectations in sociological and psychological terms. This can be seen in a variety of ways from the placebo, Pygmalion, or in terms of education-specific, the Rosenthal effect. As an online educator, the variety of geographical locations and cultures attending a class can greatly differ, so too will their expectations, and when those expectations aren’t met, classroom participation and academic scores can drop.
